Elementary Field Trip
We recently went to the capitol building in Lincoln, NE. Third and fourth graders have been studying people, laws, and Democracy. The kids were given a 45 minute tour and the guide shared specific information about the history of the building. The columns were quite the sight to see. Some of them weighed 15 tons! We were able to get a private showing of the courtroom. The guide explained to the children how a unicameral works. The kids were able to recite what our three branches of government are; Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. Many of the art pieces around the building showed important events in the history of Nebraska. There were different depictions of life in pioneer days. Bison and corn were woven into chandeliers and door decor to remind us what the pioneers ate to stay alive. Many important people were memorialized with statues and a description of what they had contributed to the history of Nebraska. We saw many senators as we walked through the halls and even took a little time to listen to them as they voted on a few bills. It was a very enriching educational experience.
